Kim Carter

Inspired by celebrities such as Boy George and Jeanne Little, Kim began experimenting with sewing her own clothes and making wearable art from the age of 10.

After failing Year 7 Textiles for not being able to sew in straight lines, Kim continued to create unique garments in her own way, using whatever materials and equipment that were on hand in her family’s workshop.

Kim went on to study costume as part of a Drama degree at Deakin University and worked briefly as a wardrobe assistant at the Malthouse Theatre before taking a position at a costume shop in South Melbourne for a number of years.

Kim has attended numerous courses and workshops through the Textile Fibre Forum, learning from leading textile artists such as Susan Holmes, Glenys Mann and Jacinta Leishman.

Originally from Melbourne, Kim and her two children settled in Numurkah nine years ago. Since her arrival, Kim has costumed for Numurkah Singers Theatre Inc and more recently has been teaching Creative Textiles in a high school.

Kim’s first solo exhibition of contemporary textile art, “What Remains”, took place in March 2014. Her second exhibition, ‘Fragility’ is currently showing at Gallery 294 in Corowa NSW, until August 3rd.

Using recycled materials and found objects is a major feature of her ongoing work as a textile artist.
