Making Space, in the context of our day at King Billy was a time to allow ourselves to enjoy making and creating in the company of other Splinter artists. Louise's garden surrounds have a tranquillity and beauty that is impossible not to respond to.
I spent much of my time coiling clay into a bowl form, sometimes in the company of other artists, sometimes alone. In my practice I use the potter’s wheel, radio or music on and a list in my head of things I need to complete. At King Billy, I slowed down, revelling in the rhythmic pressure of my hands on the clay and the warmth of the winter sun.
During the afternoon, Louise showed some of us a Chough’s nest, high in
the tree in the bush near her home. It was a strong and perfectly made bowl
form made of clay, gathered by the birds from the dam nearby, a reminder that
humans are not the only creatures able to create from clay.
This was a truly wonderful
day, sharing art, sharing food and revelling in the sights, sounds and pleasures
of this extraordinary garden and the surrounding bush.
